How to look after yourself while working from home
It is no surprise that researches have suggested that the average adult will spend 34 years of their life staring at screens . Modern life is highly connected through technology, and the majority of us would surely have a hard time functioning without it in our day-to-day life. As displays are the most common point of contact between online and physical life, how we spend the time in front of it becomes essential.
Good habits to adopt
Especially since the past year, working and studying from home implies a variety of new conditions we were not used to: our entire daily work is now on-screen (even coffee with colleagues, meetings, job interviews…) and students are doing remote learning and spending their educational time on them. Entertainment is now more online than ever, and our social interactions (aperitif with friends, birthdays celebrations…) by now for a long time are no longer in “In Real Life” as well. Ophthalmologists suggest trying and taking a break from time to time (every 20 minutes in a work or study session would be better), reminding us all – to name a few - to maintain the right distance from the screen, enough brightness, and a larger font size. And remember to blink - it helps to moisten and refresh our eyes, so make a conscious effort to blink as often as possible.
Technology to the rescue
But correct habits should be backed by technology, and that’s why AOC has been including some critical features that can really help and make that time less and less harmful. Keeping digital eye strain at bay should always be crucial and when upgrading for a new monitor there are two main technologies you should definitely look for: Low Blue Light mode and Flicker Free.
AOC Lowblue Light protects users from harmful blue light which, during long sessions, has been shown to cause overall eye fatigue, headaches, and sleeping disorders. AOC Lowblue Light feature reduces the harmful wavelengths emitted without sacrificing colour composition (it slightly alters the colour temperature), setting the experience free from the worry of eye damage.
AOC Flicker-Free technology incredibly reduces (almost eliminates) the perception of screen flicker. Flicker is an image fading between cycles displayed on video displays that, although may not be easily visible in naked eye, can surely damage users’ view. Unfortunately, modern LCD monitors are not inherently flicker-free: most of them use pulse-width modulation (PWM) for brightness control which, when the brightness is lowered, makes the flicker more noticeable and bothersome. On the other hand, AOC Flicker-Free Technology utilizes a DC (Direct Current) backlight panel, reducing flickering light levels. Minimizing eye strain and fatigue, users can enjoy the time spent in front of their monitor in absolute comfort.
Furthermore, some of AOC models such as 24P2Q and 22P2Q were even recognise by the national certification body (NCB) TÜV Rheinland, which acts both as a third-party testing and an eye comfort certification independently, to answer safety and quality standards demands by users. With the TÜV Rheinland - Certified eye comfort certification, AOC aims to reduce negative symptoms such as eye strain, headaches and blurred vision as much as possible.
Some help for gameplays
Low Blue Light mode and Flicker-Free technology can ease gamers’ concerns for their eyes’ health in long gameplays and tournaments, ensuring a comfortable viewing experience and minimising eye strain. A perfect example of a great gaming experience easy on the eyes is the G2 series, that offers models for any likings and needs (IPS or VA panels, from 24” onwards and refresh rate ranging from 144Hz to 240Hz).
Ergonomic set-ups for students and professionals
Besides visual, there is even more to look out for: setting an ergonomic place to work and study. Finding a posture that allows to see the screen while sitting back in a way that provides lower back support is key, but a lot of different aspects concur in assuring an ergonomic set up. An improper setup might cause bad posture which, in turn, can result in back and neck pain, headaches, shoulder and arm pain, muscle joint problems.
Firstly, users may need a desk high enough to keep their head, neck, hands and wrists in a neutral posture, then a chair that gives the right lumbar support. But to really ensure well-being when standing hours in the same position, the set-up needs a monitor that can be easily adjusted, tilted, and rotated for hours of working comfort. AOC provides for most of its professional and gaming models a height adjustable stand that allows to raise or lower the screen to suit each individual’s height and seating preferences. Specifically, P2 series offers stand’s height (150mm), tilt (-5~35°), swivel (180°) and (except the ultrawide CU34P2A) pivot (90°) adjustment capability to make any ergonomic alterations very accessible.
Keeping an eye out for the three main features will assure yourself a better and healthier lifestyle, whether for work, learning, gaming or entertainment. For starters, we suggest changing our bad habits while working in front of a screen. With the tips mentioned above, surely looking after yourself while working from home will not be forgotten!
