How technology (and use) can help your vision
We live in a highly digitalized world, where many of our waking hours are spent in front of multiple kinds of displays. Smartphones, tablets, laptops, tv, monitors – we deeply rely on vision to work, study, entertain, engage and interact with other people online. According to the American Academy of Ophthalmology[1], staring at screens decreases considerably how many times we blink (from 15 times per minute to almost a third), which can lead to extreme eye strain, pain, and fatigue.
AOC feels this issue, called computer vision syndrome (CVS), and wants to help its users preventing it as much as possible. The role of vision and the importance of it in working and living is what motivates AOC into developing and updating technologies for all potential users out there, to lessen the negative impact of hours spent in front of a screen.
Let’s look at which technologies and behaviours can help protecting eyes from strain and fatigue.

Technologies to help users
Technology is ever evolving, even in sectors that one might not think of. The right product can support users during their work and their free time, successfully protecting their body. Hence why AOC monitors often already offer two main features that can truly make a difference to ease long hours in front of the display and setting the experience free from the worry of eye damage: AOC LowBlue Light and AOC Flicker-Free technology.
The first protects users from harmful blue light which, during long sessions, has been shown to cause overall eye fatigue, headaches, and sleeping disorders. AOC LowBlue Light reduces these harmful wavelengths emitted without sacrificing colour composition (only slightly altering the colour temperature).
On the other hand, AOC Flicker-Free technology almost eliminates the perception of screen flicker. Flicker is a visible change in brightness between cycles on video displays that, although might not be easily visible in naked eye, can still damage the viewing experience. How does AOC solve this issue? By using a DC (Direct Current) backlight panel, which reduces flickering and minimizes eye strain and fatigue.
“Blue Light has slowly become a rising concern for many users that work hours in front of a screen, and AOC first implemented its Low Blue Light technologies in 2014 to early answer this need. While the screen's short wavelength blue light emission can cause strain, retinal stress and macular degeneration, AOC's Low Blue Light slightly changes the colour temperature to eliminate blue tones, without significantly impacting the experience.” Commented Artem Khomenko, Head of product manager of AOC. “We know how important is to have a tool that can support you in doing your work while keeping you safe – we strive to give our users the most comfortable and easy-on-the-eyes productivity, always improving our technologies to meet their needs.”
Behaviours that have an impact
Our behaviours and doings always have consequences, and we better not forget about it. For our own wellbeing in front of a monitor, to keep our eyes safe, it’s always best to follow the 20-20-20 rule: set a timer to remind you to look away every 20 minutes, looking at an object that is about 20 meters away for a full 20 seconds, to give a break to your eyes from staring and replenish your eye’s own tears.
Other actions that one may overlook but are proved to be helpful are:
- keeping the display farther can also help, at arm-length;
- cleaning the screen;
- adjusting the screen brightness to the room lightning for lower contrasts.
But our actions can help other people as well, and AOC knows well. The desire for easy-on-the-eye user experience and that for helping those in need to have the opportunity to build their own future lead AOC to partner with Eye Care Foundation, an international charity organisation that AOC is proud to support in multiple activities around the world, to help people in developing countries to avoid preventable blindness and visual impairments, while striving to ensure the most comfortable and easy-on-the-eyes user experience ever to their own users.
This because, for how much eye care is obviously a crucial aspect in our life, it’s not easily accessible to everyone around the world. But your actions can make a difference even for people in developing countries: to donate to Eye Care Foundation, please visit this page.
